Civil Guard officers from the Güímar post have caught a local man in the act whilst he was engaging in underwater fishing using an illegal rifle in a restricted area that lacked appropriate signage, posing a significant risk and without the necessary permit.
According to a statement from the Benemérita, the officers confiscated a total of 4 octopus and 16 larger fish, surpassing the maximum allowable daily limit.
Following the incident, the Civil Guard has proposed three penalties under Law 7/2003 of April 10 concerning Fishing in the Canary Islands, for fishing in a prohibited area, another for fishing without appropriate authorisation, and a third for exceeding the daily limit for recreational fishing.
As outlined in the mentioned legislation, the infractions may be classified as mild, resulting in a warning or a fine ranging from 60 to 300 euros; serious, with fines between 301 and 60,000 euros; or very serious, incurring penalties from 60,001 to 300,000 euros.
