Santa Cruz de Tenerife 21. (Press Europa) –

The Government of the Canary Islands has on Monday commenced a “review” process of the entire tourism regulatory framework, which will conclude with a reform of the General Tourism Law, originally established in 1995.

This information was disclosed during a press conference following the meeting of the Governing Council by the Executive spokesperson, Alfonso Cabello, who noted that the islands require a new regulation to tackle the “challenges” anticipated over the next three decades.

In this vein, he emphasised that this process will be conducted in accordance with the “Canarian way” of working, “joining hands and listening to all stakeholders”, by organising extensive working meetings in the upcoming months.

Regarding the recent tourist strike in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, he reminded attendees that the president, Fernando Clavijo, had previously suggested over a year and a half ago at the Fitur Fair that business owners ought to increase worker wages to “redistribute the wealth” generated by the subsector.

In this context, he appreciated the “success” of the agreement reached between workers and unions for wage increases in the province of Las Palmas and expressed hope that a similar outcome could be achieved in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, despite the unsuccessful negotiations, even with Clavijo’s intervention. “It is time to continue discussing this matter and keep working,” he stated.
