The leader of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, has expressed his profound sorrow on Monday regarding the passing of Pope Francis.
“His message of unity and dialogue inspired us all, and across the islands, we appreciated his wisdom and unwavering concern for the migratory crisis and his empathy towards the reality faced by the thousands of unaccompanied minors and the people of the Canaries. May he rest in peace,” he wrote on his social media account ‘X’.
In a statement issued by his administration, he elaborated that the Pope opened the doors to the Canary Islands when “no one” else did during the height of the migration crisis in the archipelago.
“I had the opportunity to discuss directly with him the humanitarian tragedy of migration in the Canary Islands, and he demonstrated profound understanding, not only of this humanitarian catastrophe but also of the Canary Islands themselves, even indicating his desire to visit the islands. For this reason, the Canary Islands will remain eternally grateful, and personally, I can only express my heartfelt thanks for the aforementioned.”
In a similar vein, the Canarian Vice President, Manuel Domínguez, also shared his sentiments, recalling on ‘X’ his encounter with the Pope last year, describing him as a “caring person” who was always concerned about the issues affecting the Canary Islands.
“Your legacy will reside in the hearts of many. Rest in peace,” he remarked.
