Tenerife Reimagined: Exploring a Post-Apocalyptic World in ‘The Last of Us’

Digital platforms are in a perpetual competition to provide the finest content. In the realm of series, spectacular premieres are commonplace, yet few have achieved the acclaim of ‘The Last of Us‘, which debuted in early 2023. This post-apocalyptic series, produced by HBO and based on the renowned video game of the same name, has captivated countless viewers thanks to its engaging storyline, featuring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as the lead characters.

Following a wait of over two years, the release of the second season is now imminent, prompting many fans of the series to envision various locations around the globe that could mirror the series’ setting. One likely candidate could be Tenerife, as it’s easy to imagine that if a catastrophe of such magnitude were to occur, many iconic sites on the island would be irrevocably altered.

To assist in visualising this concept, a specialist in portraying cinematic and series settings in Tenerife has created a representation on social media, illustrating how some of the most frequented locations might appear. Yeray Vargas, through his account @varg4s, has utilised various scenes from the show and associated them with areas in noticeable decline.

Tenerife Auditorium, Heliodoro Rodríguez López …

Despite the challenges faced during the construction of the Tenerife Auditorium, the situation could be far worse. The dazzling white facade of the Santa Building is now shrouded in green due to extensive mould growth that has affected the capital. A similar fate might await the Heliodoro Rodríguez López, which would retain its historic horseshoe entrance, yet the stadium would appear to be on the verge of collapse. Remaining in Santa Cruz, the capital’s renowned beach would continue to boast its golden sand… and little more. The thick layer of green encroaches upon nearly every area of Las Teresitas, and even San Andrés in the distance would present little in the way of habitability.

Visiting the Patron of the Canary Islands would no longer be a possibility, as the Basilica de Candelaria would join the list of derelict sites. With the structure in a state of pronounced decay, rusted cars strewn about the square and damaged electrical wiring, the scene depicted in the plaza would seem more fitting as a backdrop for hiding behind one of the vehicles.

The Icod drago of wines, which has withstood harsh conditions for centuries, would still be standing, albeit against a bleak backdrop. Likewise, the TF-5 would frequently resemble scenes from the onset of an apocalypse, with the image rendered in ‘The Last of Us’ showcasing an endless queue of vehicles trapped on the roads, lying in ruins.
