Simultaneously, wind conditions in the Canary Islands have also been announced, commencing at 4:00 p.m.

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE APR. (Press Europa) –

The Government of the Canary Islands, via the General Emergency Department, has declared a Prealert situation for coastal phenomena across all of the Canary Islands, effective from 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.

This action has been taken in consideration of the data provided by the State Meteorology Agency and other accessible sources, and in accordance with the specific Emergency Plan for the Canary Islands regarding adverse weather situations (PEFMA).

Consequently, forecasts from the Regional Department indicate the impending arrival of strong winds from the Northeast and rough seas on both the southeast and northwest coasts of the islands, with combined wave heights expected to reach between 2 to 3 metres.

The wind will originate from the northeast at strengths of 5-6 (29-49 kilometres per hour), with extensive areas experiencing forces of 7 (50-61 kilometres per hour) over the open waters between the islands, as well as along the southeast and northwest coasts.

Additionally, strong swells and turbulent seas are anticipated in the northern or northeastern regions with waves measuring between 1 to 2 metres, and combined wave heights again between 2 to 3 metres.

The Canary Island government has advised residents to adhere to the self-protection guidelines provided by the General Emergency Department.

Prealert for Winds

In tandem, the Government of the Canary Islands has revised the situation and declared a prealert for winds across all islands, which will also commence after 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.

As such, this includes El Hierro, La Gomera, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma (El Paso and Costa de Garafía, Fuencaliente and Mazo), Tenerife (Costa de Buenavista del Norte, San Miguel, Granadilla, Arico, Fasnia, and Güímar), and Gran Canaria (Summits, Costa de Gáldar, Agaete, Artenara, Bartolomé de Tirajana, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Agüimes, Ingenio, and Telde).

The forecasts suggest that northeast winds are expected to blow from moderate to strong, with likely intense and very strong gusts.

Thus, the average speed could range from 30 to 50 kilometres per hour, with gusts potentially reaching and exceeding 60 – 70 kilometres per hour.
