The spokesperson for the Canary Islands Government, Alfonso Cabello, expressed on Tuesday his hope that the tourist strike scheduled for this Thursday and Good Friday in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will be averted, as discussions from Monday’s meeting brought the parties closer together.
In his comments to reporters, he refrained from labelling the situation a “failure,” noting that there is still opportunity for negotiation. However, he acknowledged that if a strike does occur, it would be detrimental to the goals of both the unions and employers, as well as to the tourism image.
Cabello referenced the agreement reached that led to the suspension of the strike in the province of Las Palmas, which included a 9% salary increase and an additional payment of 650 euros. He highlighted that the new agreement will also focus on job stability, the issue of temporary contracts, better work-life balance, and ergonomic improvements in the workplace. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, he noted that the employer has proposed a salary increase exceeding 4%, approaching the 6.45% that the unions are demanding.
“I believe significant progress has been made, and I am hopeful that throughout today and tomorrow, the potential strike will be averted,” he remarked, emphasising the commitment of the Government President, Fernando Clavijo, to promote the equitable distribution of wealth generated by tourism and to enhance working conditions.
