The southern region of Tenerife, one of the areas with the highest attraction for both local and international tourists during Holy Week, offers its visitors and locals much more than just sunshine and beaches. There are numerous religious events planned by the municipalities, ranging from processions and portrayals of the Passion of Jesus Christ to stunning outdoor floral displays celebrating the central figure that exemplifies Christianity, such as the Easter Florida de Guía de Isora, a distinctive cultural event in its own right in Spain.

The main festivities commenced last week. In Granadilla de Abona, approximately a hundred individuals participated last Saturday in the municipal area to enact the Passion, famously depicting the final days of Jesus of Nazareth.

In the performance, which was attended by around 800 spectators, the non-professional actors and actresses brought to life, after months of preparation, various biblical narratives, including stoning, Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, Jesus at the Garden of Gethsemane, Judas’ betrayal, Jesus before the Sanhedrin, and ultimately, his crucifixion.

Adeje

Meanwhile, the municipality of Adeje is eagerly counting down the days until it stages the Passion, one of its most iconic and engaging events of Holy Week in the south, scheduled for Good Friday commencing at 12:00.

Having reached its 28th edition, this theatrical performance, which will engage around 300 participants, including amateur actors, has evolved into a cultural and religious landmark both within the municipality and beyond. Once again, the event will be broadcast live across the archipelago via Canarian television and nationally through 13 television.

The local council has concluded the registration period for those interested in joining the performance, which is renowned for its realism, emotional depth, and artistic excellence.

The southern municipality initiated the liturgical events last weekend with a procession featuring miniature processional figures, affectionately known as small steps, attracting considerable attention along the busiest street, as children from catechesis join in alongside their families.

Arona

The Municipality of Arona has also organised various events from Dolores Friday to Resurrection Sunday, encouraging community participation in masses, Eucharist services, processions, and the Via Crucis.

This year’s standout event included a dramatic portrayal of Jesus Christ last Sunday, held at the Terrero de Lucha in Valle San Lorenzo. Approximately eighty individuals from the parishes of Buzanada, La Camella, and Valle San Lorenzo took part in a production that vividly illustrated some of the most notable moments in Jesus’ life over a duration of 90 minutes.

Guide de Isora

The artistic director, Carlos Curbelo, highlights that Easter Florida is an exceptional cultural manifestation in Spain, where floral artistry aligns with plastic art, harmoniously blending with the beauty of the historic centre. The exhibition will commence on Holy Thursday at 12:30, allowing spectators to witness artists and florists at work in the streets, remaining on display until the final hours of the following Sunday.
