La Laguna Unveils Noise Map to Enhance Quality of Life

The City Council of La Laguna has commenced the development of an action plan to combat noise, which is a crucial tool for diagnosing and alleviating noise pollution within the municipality. This initiative involves the assessment and updating of the 2018 Strategic Noise Map, aimed at formulating specific measures that ensure a healthier and more sustainable environment for all residents.

The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, has emphasised the significance of this important step: “This noise map will provide insights into the acoustic conditions of the municipality, highlighting the areas most impacted by this form of pollution and enabling us to devise effective actions that ensure adherence to current regulations. Our priority will be to secure the necessary authorisations.”

The council member has reiterated that “all stakeholders must collaborate to create a more respectful, sustainable, and healthy municipality in the long run, where leisure, mobility, and various professional activities allow the Lagunera community to rest adequately.”

The City Council has stated that the plan, whose technical execution has been assigned to the Public Company Gesplan, is organised into various phases, including the acoustic modelling of the municipality using GIS technology, public consultation of the document, plenary approval, and subsequent monitoring of the implemented actions.

Among its key objectives are the assessment of areas with the highest noise exposure, the establishment of corrective measures, the protection of quiet zones, and compliance with European, national, and regional regulations concerning noise pollution.

The Councillor for the Environment, Domingo Galván, highlights that “this work will position La Laguna as a leading example in the Canary Islands in terms of environmental planning.” The mayor notes that “the creation of this plan will significantly reduce noise pollution and enhance the quality of the urban environment, particularly focusing on our invaluable historical centre and the most densely populated residential areas.”

The initiative, anticipated to last approximately nine months, also includes awareness and citizen engagement activities, establishing a roadmap that prioritises health, rest, and harmonious living in La Laguna.
