The Holy Week celebrations in La Laguna commenced yesterday morning, characterised by sporadic rain which necessitated the relocation of the Palm Sunday activities. Consequently, due to the weather conditions, the blessing of the palms and olive branches, originally planned for 10 am outside the Church of La Concepción, was moved indoors to the Cathedral, where the solemn Eucharist was conducted beneath, led this year by the Diocesan administrator, Antonio Pérez.
During his homily, as reported by the bishopric, he contemplated “What does Jesus Christ require in these days when he offers himself entirely for the sake of humanity?” He highlighted that Jesus “inquires whether we are willing to prepare a donkey and accompany it humbly, and if we desire to engage in a moment of closeness with him in order to comprehend what occurs during that instant of eternity, which is his sacrifice on the cross made manifest in bread and resurrection wine.” Furthermore, aligning with the views of Pope Francis, he contrasted the two attitudes evident at Calvary: Save yourself and surrender oneself. Jesus, he noted, chose the latter and extends that invitation to us as well.
Following the Eucharist, the persistent rain prompted the subsequent procession commemorating Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem to also be held within the cathedral.
Later in the afternoon, the weather provided a reprieve, allowing the processions of Our Father Jesus of the Judgment and Mary Most Holy of Bitterness, along with that of the Blessed Christ of the Falls, to proceed outside.
