The Platform for the Tenerife Republic will commemorate the reprisals of Franco on Monday, coinciding with the Day of the Republic. They will also host a manifestation, advocating for a societal model “founded on peace, social justice, equality, and environmental protection.”
The events will commence at 6:00 p.m. with a tribute at the Fyffes site, a significant location of Franco’s repression within the city, as the collective shared in a press release this past Friday.
At 7:00 p.m., a demonstration is set to start from the flower clock at García Sanabria Park, making its way through the streets of the capital with the slogan: “Peace, housing, public services, anti-fascism, ecosocialism, and republic.”
In their statement, the platform highlighted a concerning global trend towards bellicism, militarism, and authoritarianism, asserting that “not a euro nor a life” should be allocated to war, while denouncing the rise in military expenditure and the expansion of the Armaments Industrial Complex.
They emphasised their dedication to nature amid a context of “climate crisis and environmental devastation,” driven by the prevailing economic model.
Demands
The collective asserts that, from the Canary Islands, they will seek “to advance towards a democratic, solidarity-based, and environmentally conscious republic,” established through “constituent processes of the peoples of the State, which were denied following the dictator Francisco Franco’s death.”
The platform further urges the immediate removal of the Francoist monument situated in the capital of Tenerife. “Historical memory laws mandate the eradication of symbols that glorify the dictatorship, a requirement that the City of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has yet to fulfil,” they have stated.
The platform advocates for “a republic that serves the people, grounded in peace, social rights, and democratic memory.” They note in their statement that they will persist in “taking action as long as injustices, Francoist symbols, and structural inequality exist.”
