Enhancing Access to Teide: A Positive Change for Local Residents

In order to advance the processing of the TF-21 road enhancement project, which serves as the primary connection between the urban areas of the Villa and the Teide National Park, the Cabildo de Tenerife, in conjunction with the City of La Orotava, will inaugurate an information office at the Colombo Civic Centre this month. This initiative is aimed at assisting owners of adjacent land, providing them with detailed information regarding the plots that will be affected by the project.

The mayor, Francisco Linares, stresses that, “while the project will be made available for public consultation and all residents will have the opportunity to review the details and submit any objections they see fit, we wanted to proactively present the proposals to the landowners who will be impacted.” This initiative is a response to the community’s requests over the past years for a safer route.

The improvements will be conducted over a six-kilometre stretch of the TF-21, spanning from kilometres 7 to 13.2, which includes the areas between Lost Finance and Aguamansa, passing through Barroso, Colombo, Cañeño, and Camino de Chasna. The road, characterised by its winding nature and tight curves, currently poses challenges for driving and diminishes road safety. It is estimated that nearly 4,000 vehicles utilise this route each day, as it is one of the main access points to the Teide National Park and connects to the Medianías neighbourhoods.

The improvements are intended to enhance traffic safety through geometric adjustments to the road layout, as well as upgrading the surface, drainage systems, and introducing new public lighting, sewage systems, and telecommunications.

The total budget for the project is set at 38.7 million euros, with an expected duration of 24 months. The Cabildo will provide 34.5 million euros, while the City of La Orotava will contribute 4.2 million euros, as indicated by the Municipal Corporation.

Narciso Pérez, the mayor in charge of territory and security management, states that those interested in obtaining information at the new office need to schedule an appointment through the municipal website, which has a system set up specifically for this purpose. Appointments will commence on April 25, and technical staff will be available at the Colombo office.
