Santa Cruz Home Help Service Faces Criticism for Disarray

The Canarian Intersindical Union described the situation involving the over 200 auxiliaries working in the home aid service (SAD) of the capital as “genuine chaos” yesterday, under the Municipal Institute of Social Attention (IMAS).

The trade union, part of the Company Committee of the current contract holder, stated that “the situation within the service is deteriorating, as the company has opted to replace the previous coordinators with different practices, reallocating the former to other tasks associated with the Dependency Law, leading to a complete lack of oversight for both workers and users.”

The union further noted that “the auxiliaries are reaching out to reception or coordination heads, but there is no response. Additionally, services that need coverage are being sent without clear directives on how to assist each user, ultimately harming them by reducing their allocated time for care and leaving many without support amidst the disorder being perpetuated by the company itself.”

“The auxiliaries are being left in a precarious situation, resulting in an untenable atmosphere in the SAD of Santa Cruz. Although they maintain that this issue is isolated, the reality is that workers have been enduring this difficulty for an extended time, and rather than providing solutions, the situation is progressively worsening,” they commented.

The workers, who recently protested outside the Santacrucero City Council to uphold their employment rights, have opposed IMAS’s decision to extend the contract with the current provider during the transition to a new service model, which six organisations have participated in.

The Company Committee, except for UGT, is of the opinion that the service ought to be delivered directly by a public entity, “yet the inclination seems to be to offer our services to users via private firms instead.”
