Tenerife is buzzing with excitement as Johnny Depp is on the island to shoot his upcoming film, which will transform the streets of the capital into Zürich for the silver screen.

The film, titled Day Drinker, reunites the actor with his friend, with whom he has shared the screen on three occasions, Penelope Cruz. The cast also features notable names such as Luis Tosar and Madelyn Cline, and is directed by Marc Webb, known for some of Spiderman’s less successful films.

Depp and the Canary Islands

This isn’t the first time that Cruz or Tosar have visited Tenerife, but according to reports, it marks the first visit for Depp. That said, he is not entirely unfamiliar with the Canary Islands, which he unintentionally promoted globally over 30 years ago.

Less than a year ago, Depp enjoyed a few days of relaxation on the< strong> English beach in Gran Canaria, prior to attending the San Sebastián Festival, a moment captured in a viral video from the archipelago.

A reader informed the newspaper that the American actor was spotted in the vicinity of the Exhibit, where he was visible from one of the terraces. When approached and asked if he was indeed Johnny Depp, he graciously nodded in acknowledgement.

Johnny promotes the archipelago

This visit marked his initial connection with the Canary Islands, having previously made their beaches An advertisement for which countless companies would invest millions.

This editor sought to investigate the origins of that audacious promotion a few years back, yet none of the active politicians consulted at that time had a clue about it.

In 1994, one of the quintessential romantic films of the nineties debuted, featuring Johnny Depp embracing his role as a Sex symbol. The film was titled Don Juan DeMarco, where he shared the screen with the legendaryMarlon Brando, who later became a close friend of the young actor.

The storyline centred around a young man, driven to despair for failing to win over the woman of his dreams, who claims to be the famed Don Juan DeMarco, lover of over 1,500 women.

The psychiatrist portrayed by Brando is tasked with treating this young man, and as he recounts his story, the psychiatrist begins to question the young man’s sanity, leading to a series of humorous situations that conclude with a satisfying ending embodying love and passion.

As soon as you start

To catch sight of the reference to the Canary Islands in the film, one must not miss the start, as it is featured within just a few minutes of footage. The character played by Brando responds to the suicide attempt call of the young Don Juan, who is atop a building threatening to jump.

What comes as a surprise is the appearance of an enormous banner featuring a girl in a bikini and mask (echoing the film’s theme), posing on a beach with the slogan: “The beaches of the Canary Islands. Spain. Uncover the mysteries“.

The Canary Islands in Don Juan DeMarco / Ed

It is clear that what is depicted is not a beach in the Canary Islands but rather a set piece where the model poses, yet the advertising presence is undeniable.

For several minutes, the characters converse with the poster behind them, and although there are no further references to the archipelago throughout the film, this can be regarded as one of the first Hollywood productions to feature the Canary Islands without any of the film’s crew stepping foot on the islands.
