The Provincial Labour and Social Security Inspection of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has advised Metropolitan from Tenerife to establish its own prevention service. Additionally, it mandates the company to investigate driving incidents, as detailed in a report accessed by Europa Press.
These recommendations aim to support the Federation of Services to the Citizenship of Canary Obreras Commissions (FSC-CCOO), which has been advocating for these actions from Metropolitan since the commencement of the strike in February 2024, as stated by FSC-CCOO in a recent announcement.
Moreover, the inspection has instructed the company to revise its Occupational Risk Prevention Plan, ensuring its alignment with current regulations and its efficacy as a management tool.
The report further highlights the necessity for preventive integration, whether through the allocation of designated workers or the establishment of an independent prevention service, particularly given the intricate processes of the company.
The timeframe for addressing these shortcomings is set at six months.
Investigation of Incidents
The report alerts the company to its “obligation” to investigate workplace incidents related to tram operations, including the involvement of prevention delegates in these inquiries.
It also emphasises the significance of notifying delegates at the moment the accident is reported and ensuring their access to the investigation documentation.
FSC-COO further notes that the inspection underscores the critical nature of these measures to ensure the safety and health of employees, as well as adherence to legal obligations.
Health Concerns in Trams
Furthermore, without detracting from this request, the company is urged to inform about these actions, and additionally, to seek assistance from the relevant authorities in civil protection and traffic should further considerations need to be addressed.
The Labour Inspection report emphasises that, despite lithium-ion batteries being a relatively novel technology, they pose a risk of fires and explosions, potentially resulting in severe harm to both individuals and economic losses. Therefore, it is vital to implement measures for their safe handling and storage.
