San Sebastián de la Gomera 10 Apr. (Press Europa) –

The Cabildo de la Gomera, via the Insular Operational Coordinating Centre (Cecopin), has addressed over fifty incidents during the initial hours of the Borrasca ‘Olivier’ traversing the island.

The Emergency Insular Councillor, Héctor Cabrera, indicated that around forty of these have been associated with landslides at various locations within the Insular Road Network, in addition to the operation initiated to manage a non-injury traffic incident occurring in the municipality of Hermigua.

“This has also included actions related to power supply interruptions and minor floods in residences,” he added.

He further emphasised that, throughout the day, the collaboration of troops and State Security Forces has been present; Civil Protection, Help in Anaga Emergencies (AEA), Volunteer Fire Brigade of Valle Gran Rey and La Gomera; alongside the road operation, the Environment Unit and local authorities, all coordinated from the Cecopin, noted a report from the Cabildo.

For his part, the Insular Road Councillor, Aníbal González, reported that, regarding the road network, the most significant incidents have been observed at various kilometre points of the GM-2 since early morning, due to landslides in the section between the Galanas – Degollada de Peraza, and the Roques, as well as in the GM-3 between the slaughterhouse of Peraza and Vegaipala.

The section between Vallehermoso and Epina, along with access to the village of Aljera, has also been impacted.

“Concerning road closures, those decreed yesterday continue in effect on the CV-14 (El Rejo road), both from the intersection with the GM-1 and access to El Cedro, and from the GM-2, at the junction of La Sarcita,” he insisted.

Furthermore, he reminded that the road maintenance operation is in effect across various parts of the island’s road network, urging people “to avoid unnecessary travel, not only for safety reasons but also to aid the efforts of the emergency team.”

Activation of the Insular Emergency Plan

The Cabildo reminds that the Insular Emergency Plan is currently active in a pre-emergency phase, involving the preventive closure of recreational areas, tracks, and trails.

The trail and forest track network is also closed in coordination with the members of Garajonay National Park.

The island institution calls for adherence to the restrictions expressed in the PEIN statement.

Additionally, all technical and human resources dependent on the Cabildo are mobilised, alongside the volunteer teams and State Security Forces.

The Insular Water Council of La Gomera, in light of the alert for rainfall and the pre-alert for potential flooding, advises checking the condition of roofs and drains, as well as avoiding access to cultivated land.

It is also emphasised that one should refrain from crossing bridges where water exceeds, and from entering flooded areas (garages, basements), as well as parking vehicles in landslide-prone zones or channels.
