The University of La Laguna (Ull) has requested increased assistance from the Canary Islands government for university accommodation on Wednesday. This appeal comes in light of approximately 1,400 applications, which “clearly surpasses” the available 550 spaces this year.
During the Wednesday meeting of the Governing Council of the educational institution, the Vice Chancellor of Students, Rosario Hernández, noted that the call for accommodation places for the 2025-2026 academic year has been sanctioned across its three main schools and university residence. The conditions remain unchanged from the previous year and will be enacted starting from April 11, according to a statement from the ULL.
Hernández emphasised that the “minimum” provision of 511 anticipated places, which has been adjusted this year to 550, and clarified that some applications are always excluded due to specific circumstances.
Rosario Hernández expressed her support for the requests made by various Governing Council members to urge the Canary Islands Government to back these centres, which are essential services for individuals with lower incomes, fostering equal opportunities among students.
Due to the substantial demand for this service, which possesses a significant social aspect, the previous guidance indicated that should vacancies arise, they would be allocated to doctoral students. This has now been revised to prioritise new entrants in such cases.
In the same session, the fees for the accommodation centres were ratified, with proposals to keep the same rates as last year, albeit adjusted for a 2.2% increase in the region’s IPC.
Furthermore, the Governing Council has approved delegating powers to the rector, Francisco García, for the incorporation, generation, extension, and reduction of credits, aimed at streamlining internal management. Additionally, the delegation of budgetary modifications within the same spending centre will also be entrusted to management.
