Garajonay National Park has also announced the closure of the trails and paths.

San Sebastián de la Gomera, 9 Apr. (Europa Press) – The Cabildo de la Gomera has initiated a preventive closure of the recreational areas, paths, and tracks across the island due to the impending ‘Olivier’ storm impacting the region, which is expected to bring locally heavy and very intense rainfall, ranging from 40 to 80 mm within a 12-hour period, along with thunderstorms.

The decision comes as the island has activated the Insular Emergency Plan (PIN), entering a pre-emergency phase, due to the rainfall alert issued by the General Directorate of Safety and Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government.

The local authority is urging compliance with the restrictions laid out in the PEIN statement. Furthermore, all technical and human resources under the Insular Cabildo have been mobilised, alongside volunteer troops and members of the State Security Forces.

Garajonay National Park has also declared the closure of paths and tracks during this alert period.

PREALERTS

The Government of the Canary Islands has also announced a Prealert status for coastal phenomena in the Western Islands, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, as well as for rainfall, winds, and storms across all islands, effective from Wednesday, April 9.

The forecast indicates that the areas most affected will be the west and southwest coasts of La Gomera, with a poor sea state and combined wave heights of 2.5 to 4 metres.

Consequently, there will be moderate seas, intensifying with regions of heavy swell among the islands with significant topography during the latter half of Wednesday, along with seas from the northwest and west ranging from 2.5 to 4 metres.

The observations also predict intense thunderstorms, accompanied by electrical activity and locally heavy rainfall, as well as wind gusts exceeding 70 km/h.

Additionally, very strong wind gusts are anticipated, likely reaching or surpassing 70 km/h, predominantly from the southwest with strong intervals, particularly in elevated areas and summits, with possible very high gusts.

From the Cabildo, residents are advised to adhere to the guidance provided by the Directorate of Security and Emergencies. Citizens are also reminded that in any risk scenario, they should contact emergency services by dialling 1-1-2, or reach Cecopin at 922 14 15 01.
