Where do the Canarians prefer to journey during the Holy Week Vacation? Next week heralds the onset of a short disconnection period for the majority of the Canary Islands. The North of the Peninsula is the destination favoured by the islanders. This was articulated by Francesco Delli-Paoli, manager of the Canarian Association of Travel and Triver Agencies (ACAVYT). «Santander, Galicia, Asturias… any part of the north ».

The enhancement in air connectivity between the archipelago and the peninsula is noteworthy during this holiday period. The airline Binter has commenced routes to A Coruña, Pamplona, San Sebastián, Santander, Vigo and Zaragoza. The expansion of routes and the increase in flight frequencies positively impact price competitiveness, benefiting travellers economically.

Add to this the 75% discount for Canarian residents on flights between the islands and the peninsula. This incentive significantly reduces ticket costs. Thanks to this discount, travelling off the archipelago has become a much more accessible activity. However, the discount leaves many Canarians residing on the peninsula who return to the islands for the holidays.

Vigo is one of the most sought-after cities for travel / The Day

international political climate marked by the conflict between Israel and Palestine and external tensions stemming from tariffs imposed by United States President Donald Trump, Canarians do not seem to be deterred from travelling. “The demand for travel has increased by two percentage points compared to the previous year,” Delli-Paoli notes. The early sales have also “grown”, indicating that the fear of travelling is not as pronounced as it may appear.

The profiles of travellers are “diverse.” This variety encompasses families, couples, and particularly groups of friends. Delli-Paoli mentions that they plan their trips a year in advance to “fully enjoy them and guarantee optimal conditions.”

Rural Getaways

An increasing number of Canarians are opting for gastronomic and rural escapes for their holidays. The regions of northern Spain attract visitors due to their landscapes and climate, as well as their culinary offerings: winery visits, skewer routes, and local products with a designation of origin.

The archipelago itself has experienced a resurgence in rural tourism. Some residents prefer to remain on the islands, disconnecting in tranquil surroundings. Notable areas include the northern regions of Tenerife, La Palma, and El Hierro.

The Canary Islands are not just a destination for tourists; they also welcome them. According to the German tourist operator Tui, they are the most favoured destination among Europeans. A 28% of their clients selected Spain as their holiday destination this Holy Week. Following the archipelago, other destinations include Türkiye and Egypt.
