250 companies join the sustainable tourism development model

A total of 250 island companies have already joined the Biosphere Sustainable platform, a pioneering project in Spain that involves the public and private sectors in the path towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations for 2030. The Council, via Tenerife Tourism (DTT), and is coordinated by the Responsible Tourism Institute (ITR). The intention is to advance the model of sustainable development for the sector.

The CEO of TDT, David Pérez, has an impact on «The development of a powerful, collaborative and committed ecosystem which, through the platform, will help tourism companies to work under global responsibility and create a scenario of good practices for mutual learning ”.

The companies in the island tourism sector have the support of the Centers for Initiatives and Tourism (CIT). As promoters, and within their collaboration with Turismo de Tenerife, Pérez points out: “They manage to increase the number of companies that receive information, advice and support to join initiatives like this, which add value to their offer.” The Biosphere Certified recognition, “is only achieved after passing an audit that demonstrates compliance with a series of specific actions,” explains the director.

The insular director of Tourism, Laura Castro, for her part, assures that Tenerife is “a pioneer throughout the country” thanks to the launch of this project, which involves the public administration and the tourism sector.

Castro highlights the involvement of the tourism sector in favor of sustainability. He explains that the platform will allow companies to create their specific action plans linked to the 17 SDGs “from the conservation of oceans and aquatic resources (SDG 14), to the promotion of sustainable mobility (11) or job creation worthy (8) ».

The tourist accommodation contributions They range from promoting and supporting local agriculture and its distribution markets to educational projects on sustainability, connecting with companies in sustainable water activities or using energy consumption monitoring and indicator systems. In addition to hotels, among the 250 that use the platform are shops, restaurants, active tourism and nature firms, training centers, museums and event organizers.
