Santa Cruz de Tenerife 5 Apr. (Press Europa) –
Esther Peña, the spokesperson for the Federal Executive Commission of the PSOE, emphasised this Saturday that the validation vote on the decree law for the obligatory distribution of migrant minors next Thursday will showcase “the security” that socialism offers to the Canary Islands. It will also present an “opportunity” to see “where some stand and where others lie,” referring to the “irresponsibility” of the PP.
While addressing the media during the 18th Insular Congress of Tenerife and alongside the Insular Secretary Tamara Raya, Peña stressed that socialists “will rise to the occasion” next Thursday, as the party “has listened to the Canaries and the Canary Islands in this new project of reception, solidarity and responsibility,” associated with the amendment of Article 35 “of the Law on foreigners.
“In light of all the irresponsibility and insecurity that characterise their actions, the right in these islands and this country finds its safe alternative in socialism – a value that embodies leadership along with clear projects and objectives. In this instance, in Tenerife, it is the one led by my esteemed friend Tamara Raya,” she stated.
The spokesperson for the Federal Executive Commission seized the moment to endorse “the leadership” of Raya, the new federal secretary on the island, aiming to attain “the maximum number of governments by 2027” through “new ideas” and “traditional values of equality, freedom, and social justice.”
“It is often said that the left possesses a unique attribute, which is the ability to renew and adapt. This is precisely what is celebrated in a conference like this: new ideas, new projects, fresh teams, and new leaderships under Tamara Raya’s guidance,” she added.
Critique of the PP
Accordingly, she has challenged the Popular Party, asking “what more must transpire in this country or in the world” for them to choose to sever ties with the far-right, which seeks to “eradicate our way of life and the values and principles we uphold.” This criticism was also directed, at the regional level, towards the Canarian coalition.
“Our social welfare and cultural model relies on the isolation of the right,” asserted Peña, who insisted that it is time for the Popular Party to “decide either with Vox or with the Canary Islands, or with Vox or with the wellbeing of Spanish citizens,” she stated.
In this regard, she recalled that “six Canarian deputies” from the right voted in Congress against crucial issues for the islands, specifically “against the free public transport, against aid for the palm, and also against debt cancellation.”
When questioned about the Supreme Court’s ruling on the state protection of over a thousand asylum seekers in the Canary Islands, Esther Peña expressed her respect for the judiciary and commitment to “unquestionably comply with the rulings,” while also awaiting clarity on “how” the new regulation, up for validation on April 10 in Congress, regarding the decree law of migrant minors, will shape up.
“We have signed a European immigration and asylum pact, for which we are all co-responsible (…). We must accompany and integrate all that regulation to establish a responsible, coordinated, and supportive reception system.”
