Tenerife’s Cabildo Mobilizes 320 Personnel Amid Escalating Wind Conditions

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 3 APR. (Press Europa) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife has initiated a security initiative involving 320 personnel ahead of the arrival of Borrasca “Nuria” on the island, anticipating a “deterioration” of conditions from approximately 14.00 hours.

This was communicated during a press briefing by the president, Rosa Dávila, who conveyed a cautionary message to residents as the island is under a yellow warning for winds, posing an “extreme risk” to individuals.

“The front has merely arrived,” she stated, although she mentioned that, according to AEMET’s forecasts, it will be a vigorous but short-lived episode, likely concluding around 10 pm.

To date, wind gusts of up to 150 kilometres per hour have been noted in the Teide National Park, with strong winds affecting the Low Island, compounded by rainfall in certain municipalities of the south—registering up to 50 litres per square metre at Cruz de Tea.

Throughout the morning, there have been primarily instances of fallen fences, trees, branches, and some landslips—specifically on the road to El Batán—along with a minor injury resulting from an iron falling in the municipality of Puerto de la Cruz.

Moreover, the access road to Teno is closed to vehicles, as is customary whenever an alert is in effect, alongside restricted access to the beaches, marked by warning zones.

Néstor Padrón, head of the Cabildo Security and Civil Protection Technical Service, emphasised the importance of “coordination” with all municipalities, which have also activated their local emergency protocols, while identifying the peak impact of the storm anticipated between 2 pm and 7 pm.

He has focused attention on the metropolitan area due to its high population density, given the potential developments throughout the afternoon.

In this regard, Dávila appraised that public authorities and numerous businesses had opted to encourage teleworking on Thursday, or to allow employees to leave early to avoid congesting the roads.

Initially, it is expected that classes will resume on the island this Friday, pending confirmation of any damages to educational facilities that would impede normal operations.
