SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 3 APR. (Press Europa) –
The Our Lady of Candelaria University Hospital has commenced the use of nitrous oxide as an analgesic option to the epidural, from which women in labour can benefit. This hospital is currently the only one in the archipelago to offer this service, and since its introduction in March, six women have availed themselves of it.
This technique is non-invasive and aids in diminishing the sensation of pain during contractions while allowing freedom of movement, which is particularly beneficial in the early stages of labour, as stated by the hospital in a press release issued this Thursday.
Hospital representatives explain that this gas is administered in a 50-50 mixture with oxygen, and it is also utilised in other obstetric procedures, such as the external cephalic version—when the baby is positioned buttocks first and needs to be repositioned for a successful delivery—thanks to its analgesic, relaxing, and mildly sedative properties.
Consequently, the analgesia offered by nitrous oxide is less effective than that provided by an epidural, as its effects are mild to moderate. However, it presents several advantages; it does not hinder the mobility of the expectant mother, requires no extra monitoring, and permits women to manage their pain relief as needed.
Additionally, as mentioned, the drug’s effects rapidly dissipate once the mother ceases usage.
The hospital notes that the adoption of this protocol stems from the fact that between 20% and 25% of pregnant women visiting the facility choose not to receive epidural analgesia, either by personal preference or due to circumstances beyond their control.
The professionals in the maternity service, adhering to the hospital’s commitment to excellence in care, have initiated this alternative to enable women to experience their labour in a more comfortable manner. This analgesic option provides mothers with more choices regarding how they wish to navigate the birthing process.
