The Cabildo de Tenerife has initiated the Tenerife Insular Emergency Plan (PEIN) in response to the Maximum wind alert issued by the General Emergency Department of the Canary Islands Government, effective from 00:00 on Thursday, April 3, owing to the approaching Nuria Borrasca, which is expected to produce wind gusts reaching up to 120 km/h in Teide National Park and between 100 and 80 km/h across various municipalities on the island.
Prior to the declaration of a Maximum alert for coastal winds and phenomena and the Prealert for rains by the General Emergency Department of the Canary Islands Government, the municipalities of Tenerife have implemented their respective Emergency Municipal Plans (PEMU) and have taken preventive measures to close and suspend activities for Thursday, April 3.
Measures in the Metropolitan Area and East Zone
In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the PEMU has been activated at the maximum alert level. All sports, cultural, and educational institutions are closed, and any activities organised or sanctioned by the City Council have been halted, alongside public events and leisure spaces. The protocol for assisting the homeless has also been activated. Individuals are advised to avoid travel and movement through parks and wooded areas, which will be marked off.
In San Cristóbal de la Laguna, citizen centres, the municipal market, parks, cemeteries, children’s schools, the Ceda de Anchieta, the Acaymo Day Centre, and natural swimming pools will be closed. Moreover, outdoor activities and in-person classes are suspended, including those at the University of La Laguna.
In La Rosario, the City Council has activated the PEMU. All outdoor activities are suspended, including those at nursery schools. The Local Police, Civil Protection, and Municipal Services are on preventive standby.
Candelaria has also activated its PEMU, enforcing the closure of sports and cultural facilities, as well as the Los Menceyes Municipal School, the Arco Iris Occupational Centre, Afate, and the recreational area of Brezos. All activities planned by municipal offices are on hold.
In Tegueste, classes, sports activities, and citizen engagement initiatives are suspended. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to consult only official sources.
North zone of the island
In Tacoronte, the coastal bathing areas (Mesa del Mar and El Pris) are closed, and access to jetties, breakwaters, and seaside walks is prohibited. Coastal parking is also restricted, and road signage has been altered to ensure safety.
La Victoria de Acentejo has cancelled all social, cultural, and sports activities. Facilities such as playrooms, children’s schools, CAI, active ageing centres, sports facilities, and El Montillo Park are closed.
In Santa Úrsula, the City Council has suspended all public activities and declared that school activities will not be conducted in person from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday.
La Orotava has shut down sports facilities, cemeteries, civic and cultural centres. The PEMU is in effect, and the Holy Week concert has been postponed. Extreme caution is advised to prevent items from balconies and roofs from falling.
In Puerto de la Cruz, the PEMU has been activated, and outdoor activities are cancelled. All municipal facilities will remain closed for the duration of the alert.
Los Realejos continues to suspend classes and all extracurricular, sports, cultural, and social participation activities. El Socorro beach is closed, and citizens are reminded of the possibility of wind gusts exceeding 120 km/h in elevated regions.
San Juan de la Rambla has halted all municipal outdoor activities and will close facilities from April 3 until conditions improve.
La Guancha has activated its PEMU, suspending all activity in municipal spaces, including sports schools, music schools, cultural centres, Chico Chico, playrooms, and sports centres.
In Icod de los Vinos, all municipal units are closed apart from the town hall. Sports, cultural, and festive activities are cancelled, and the use of recreational areas is prohibited.
Garachico has suspended classes and cancelled all sports activities scheduled for Thursday.
Los Silos has announced the suspension of school and extracurricular activities in municipal facilities. Citizens are urged to take extreme precautions.
In Buenavista del Norte, school and cultural activities are suspended, and youth, cultural, and sports facilities are closed.
No official information has been published yet regarding specific measures in El Tanque.
Southern area of the island
Face-to-face activity has been suspended in the Candelaria City Council, which is also recommending the cancellation of in-person working activities in the City Council, with public employees working remotely from home, except for those in Security, Emergency, and Civil Protection (Local Police and Civil Protection) and personnel engaged in maintenance and service trades, who will work in situ to ensure citizen safety.
Arafo has announced the suspension of all cultural, sports, and social activities in the municipality, along with any events occurring in public spaces (markets, etc.) and municipal infrastructure. The cemetery will be closed for safety reasons.
In Güímar, all municipal, leisure, and recreation facilities will be closed (parks, sports centres, swimming pools, educational institutions, playrooms, sports courts, music schools, etc.). In addition, all public events or performances sponsored by the City Council will be cancelled.
Fasnia communicated through social media the cancellation of the neighbourhood meeting planned for April 3 due to the declared weather alert. Additionally, all sports facilities, the municipal cemetery, recreational areas, and cultural centres will be closed.
The Arico City Council will suspend educational activities, although they may be conducted remotely when feasible. Due to the current alerts, cultural centres and other municipal buildings, municipal sports facilities, Saltimbanquis Children’s School, the Occupational Centre, and the Abades Day Centre will be closed, and extracurricular and recreational activities planned will be cancelled.
In the Granadilla de Abona municipality, the City Council will proceed to close all municipal facilities (sports, cultural, cemetery, picnic areas, day centres, Sanipeques Children’s School) and, therefore, all planned municipal activities are suspended. The PEMU will remain active until further notice.
In San Miguel de Abona, all sports, leisure, and cultural activities taking place in municipal facilities have been suspended as of 00:00 hours, with school activities shifted to a remote format.
Meanwhile, Arona, following the guidance of the DGSE, will suspend all outdoor activities and those within municipal facilities starting at 9:00 PM on April 2, 2025, until the maximum alert concludes.
Adeje has activated the Municipal Emergency Plan (PEMAD) and the suspension of all activities, closing municipal facilities such as the Municipal Children’s School, Diversity Attention Centre, Senior Day Centre, Sports Pavilions, Football Fields, etc., from 00:00 hours on Thursday, April 3 (from the night of Wednesday to Thursday).
Vilaflor de Chasna has yet to publish official information regarding specific measures.
From the Guides Isora City Council, all school activities are suspended for tomorrow.
Other general measures in force
At the insular level, Cabildo de Tenerife is maintaining access to paths, forest tracks, and recreational areas under its jurisdiction. The Ministry of Education of the Canary Islands Government has ordered the suspension of in-person classes in Tenerife for Thursday, April 3, encompassing all educational levels. Additionally, the alert for coastal phenomena and the prealert for rain, with the expectation of locally heavy precipitation, remains in effect.
Authorities stress the significance of consulting only official sources and adhering to the recommendations of Civil defence at all times.
