Santa Cruz de Tenerife 2 Apr. (Press Europa) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife will restrict access to recreational areas, pathways and forest routes, as well as the 41 trails of Teide, as a precautionary measure ahead of the impending ‘Nuria’ storm, which is expected to bring wind gusts of up to 120 km/h in Teide and between 80 and 100 km/h across various municipalities on the island.

This decision follows the activation of the Insular Emergency Plan of Tenerife (PEIN), as stated by the Insular Corporation in an announcement, and after the General Emergency Department of the Canary Islands Government declared a maximum alert for winds for Tenerife this Thursday.

Furthermore, a prealert for rainfall has been issued from 9:00 am, predicting weak to moderate showers, with the possibility of locally intense downpours that may reach or exceed 15-20 mm in an hour in the western and southern regions of Tenerife.

The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, has urged the public “to avoid unnecessary travel” while this maximum alert period remains in effect. “We are confronting an adverse weather situation characterised by extremely strong winds, coastal turbulence, and rainfall,” cautioned the island president.

Dávila also reminded that, in collaboration with the Canary Islands government, it has been decided to cancel classes in all educational institutions on Tenerife from tomorrow as a protective measure to ensure the safety of students and faculty.

The Minister for Natural Environment, Sustainability and Safety and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, clarified that these measures are implemented “to ensure the safety of individuals,” and emphasised that the activation of the REin entails a set of recommendations for both residents and the municipalities on the island.

Recommendations

Consequently, visits to Teide National Park are discouraged during the duration of this weather event, and residents have been advised to exercise maximum caution on the roads that traversed the summit, should travel be essential.

The Cabildo’s Occupational Risk Prevention Area has been instructed to facilitate teleworking for employees of the Insular Corporation, except for those involved in the provision of essential services.

Additionally, the various councils of the Insular Corporation have been directed to cancel outdoor activities that were scheduled, and municipalities are also encouraged to consider implementing preventive actions based on the current situation.

The island authority has called on the public to adhere to the self-protection guidelines issued by the Civil Protection authorities.
