The president of CEOE Tenerife, Pedro Alfonso Martín, expressed his approval on Wednesday regarding the statistics of the strike in the Canary Islands, which has decreased by 423 individuals in March compared to the previous month (-0.3%), bringing the total number of unemployed to 157,428. However, he emphasised that there is still “a lot” to be accomplished in terms of active employment policies.
“Although the reduction is not significant, any decrease is worthy of celebration. What we must prioritise is the context of our situation. There are still 157,000 unemployed individuals. We have considerable work ahead of us, especially in enhancing active employment policies,” remarked the president of the province’s business community.
He highlighted the “serious issue” surrounding the challenge of filling labour vacancies, while ensuring that these roles are filled efficiently. “Moreover, we encounter challenges related to absenteeism that remain unsolved.”
Alfonso noted that the organisation is focusing internally on enhancing company productivity, yet they do not feel adequately supported by public administration. Therefore, it is imperative to “work more vigorously and effectively to ensure that not only the unemployment rate declines, but that we can also incorporate a greater level of productivity across the islands.”
