The Holy Week of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 2025 will feature over 40 events spread across the five districts of the municipality. The inaugural event is scheduled for April 9 at 8:30 p.m., which will include the reading of the proclamation by historian Gerardo Fuentes. The Carmen Rosa Zamora Choir from the Municipal School of Music will also participate, held at the Church of La Concepción.

The city’s vicar and pastor of the mother church of Our Lady of Conception, Juan Manuel Yanes, noted the increasing involvement in these events, stating that “in addition to their religious importance, they possess a significant cultural essence linked with the city’s history.” He further emphasised “the splendour and solemnity” associated with the processions, not just in the city centre but also in the surrounding areas, and encouraged visitors from other parts of the island to experience Holy Week in the capital.

Yanes highlighted the growing appeal of this festival, which sees more attendees each passing year. “Santa Cruz is a city where an increasing number of tourists are drawn to its streets to celebrate Holy Week, including the thousands of cruise passengers who arrive and opt to witness the various processions throughout the municipality.” He believes that this celebration has gained strength over the years, with many individuals choosing to remain in Santa Cruz to partake in these events “in reflection and tranquility.”

During the unveiling of the programme of religious events at the town hall, the archpriest of Ofra and pastor of San Antonio de Padua and Santa Clara, Antonio Gómez, underscored the significance of “conducting activities within the parishes, as well as in the secular domain, such as processions,” specifically highlighting the Joint Crucis Via involving all parishes set to occur in García Sanabria Park.

Additional Notable Events

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the arrival of the image of Our Father Jesus Captive in Santa Cruz, an Extraordinary procession will take place this Saturday, April 5, winding through the streets of the city centre, commencing from the Church of La Concepción.

The preceding Friday, the same church will host the performance of the most renowned work by the Canarian composer Julio Navarro Grau, his “Requiem itself” in its original 1971 arrangement for organ, mixed choir, children’s choir, and four soloists (soprano, contralto, tenor, and bass). This piece is among the composer’s most significant works, recognised as one of the most important contributions to Canarian classical music of the twentieth century.

Moreover, on Monday, April 10, in the afternoon, an Theatrical Dynamics Action will be promoted by the Central-Iphara district. This performance will explore, from both a historical and cultural standpoint, the 1893 cholera epidemic in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the figure of the Lord of Tribulations. The route will span the streets connecting San Francisco Square and Plaza de la Candelaria.
