Unstable Weather Ahead: Anticyclone Retreats, Heavy Rains Expected in the Canaries

Madrid 29 (Europa Press) –

An anticyclonic system will usher in stable weather across the peninsula throughout Sunday, characterised by predominantly clear skies, with the exception of the Canary Islands where the approach of a storm will result in overcast conditions and locally heavy rainfall, as reported by the State Meteorology Agency (Aemet).

Aemet indicates that only cloudy conditions are expected in the vicinity of the Eastern Cantabrian and the High Ebro. In the early morning hours, La Palma and El Hierro will experience intense storms, while Gran Canaria and Tenerife will see lighter rainfall accompanied by winds from the southeast.

Additionally, an orange warning has been issued due to high wind gusts in the Catalan Pyrenees, specifically in Ampurdan, where gusts may reach up to 100 km/h. Furthermore, a similar orange warning is in place along the coasts of Mallorca and Menorca, where waves could rise between 4 to 7 metres, along with gusts reaching up to 85 km/h, with scattered showers expected towards the end of the day.

Regarding temperatures, a decrease is predicted in the Balearic Islands and central parts of the peninsula, while increases are anticipated in Andalusia, Ceuta, Melilla, Castilla y León, and Canarias; elsewhere in Spain, temperatures will remain stable. Consequently, temperatures across the Peninsula are expected to range between 15ºC and 25ºC, leading to a uniform distribution throughout Spain.

Overall, the weather will be stable throughout the day, with temperatures in the Peninsula reaching up to 24ºC in Pontevedra, 21ºC in southwestern Andalusia, such as Cádiz, Sevilla, and Córdoba, as well as 20ºC in Madrid and Barcelona.

Moreover, minimum temperatures will drop in the Pyrenees and southern Iberia, ranging from 2ºC to 6ºC during the day. However, in the rest of the country, lower temperatures between 2ºC and 3ºC are expected on average across the Peninsula.

Consequently, Aemet advises that some regions may still encounter frost. Sunday morning will initially be chilly in parts of the Iberia, particularly in Huesca, Teruel, and Cuenca, as well as in certain areas of the Peninsular Interior, including the Montes de León and regions such as Ávila and Segovia in the central system.
