Santa Cruz de Tenerife 26 Mar. (Europa Press) –

The Governing Council of the Cabildo de Tenerife sanctioned the agreement with the Canary Housing Institute on Wednesday for the implementation of the V of the State and Autonomic Agreement aimed at promoting protected housing. This initiative will enable the construction of 674 residences in the Canary Islands, with 134 set to be established in Tenerife.

Specifically, these dwellings will be situated in the municipalities of Adeje, Arona and Guía de Isora. An overall investment of 18,224,978 euros for the island is projected, with the Cabildo contributing 4.4 million euros, as detailed by the island’s institution in a press release.

“This contribution signifies our commitment, which has been evident since last year, to promote various models and programmes of housing for those citizens in most need in Tenerife,” stated Vice President Lope Afonso.

In a different vein, the Ministry of Mobility has announced the preliminary results of the demand-responsive transport service in the municipalities of Güímar, Arico, and Fasnia. Since its commencement in November 2024 and up to March 24, 2025, the service has successfully transported 5,038 individuals, reflecting around 40% of the over 13,000 residents in this southern area.

The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, has reviewed the data and claimed that it supports “the effectiveness” of a measure that forms part of the 70 initiatives by the Cabildo aimed at advancing a “more sustainable mobility, which prioritises public transport and reduces vehicular traffic on the roads”.

The free service intends to ease the daily journeys of residents living in remote rural areas or locations with limited conventional public transport options. The system, which is regionalised and devoid of fixed routes, operates from Monday to Friday between 6:30 and 20:30, offering a flexible response to actual demand.

Moreover, all routes are interconnected with the nearest bus stops, encouraging the utilisation of collective public transport.

“We are already undertaking efforts to gradually expand this service to other areas of the island. We are currently processing the necessary hiring documents to extend the service to Tacoronte-El Sauzal; La Matanza, La Victoria, and Santa Úrsula; as well as Icod, Garachico, El Tanque, and Los Silos,” the president remarked.

Regarding municipal collaboration, the project for the sanitation network in the area of Las Chafiras has received approval, which is part of the Insular Plan for Cooperation on Municipal Works and Services from 2022 to 2026. This will require an investment of 2,543,211.40 euros in one of the most vibrant industrial and residential zones in the southern part of the island.

The project is co-financed by the Cabildo de Tenerife, contributing 58.02% of the budget, alongside the San Miguel City Council which will cover 41.98% of the expenses.

Furthermore, in the realm of the primary sector, the Governing Council has resolved to enhance agricultural research through a new collaboration protocol with the ICIA, alongside a funding line to support livestock health defence initiatives, aiming to ensure clinical veterinary assistance for the island’s cattle farms.
