José Domingo Regalado (CC) has been appointed as the new mayor of Granadilla de Abona following the successful motion of no confidence initiated by his party, one of the two mayors from the PP and Vox against the socialist Jennifer Miranda, the candidate who garnered the most votes in the 2023 elections.
Until now, Miranda governed alongside the two councillors from the PP, who were dismissed from their party mainly for supporting her election. One of these councillors, Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, has now endorsed the no-confidence motion that enables the nationalist leader to reclaim the mayoralty of Granadilla.
Regalado previously held this position in 2016, after another no-confidence motion, and again during the term from 2019 to 2023.
The council meeting was met with considerable anticipation, featuring a gathering of local residents who both chanted support for Regalado while others shouted accusations of “fascism” against the council.
Granadilla de Abona is the third municipality in the Canary Islands where a coalition government between the Canarian Coalition and the Popular Party has formed a pact with Vox, following similar agreements in Teguise on Lanzarote and Arona in Tenerife.
