Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 25 Mar. (Europa Press) –

The president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, announced on Tuesday that the public companies Gestur and Proexca will lead the establishment of a Prospective and Strategy Office. This office will be tasked with examining projects that are significant for the islands.

Responding to an inquiry from the mixed group, he highlighted the “shifting environment” following the pandemic, noting that the current governmental structure belongs to “the last century.” Therefore, a body is required that “extends beyond” existing frameworks, enabling the “redirection of the archipelago’s path.”

He further stated that the office will focus on issues such as immigration, demographic challenges, rising tariffs, regulating population growth, studying and replicating successful initiatives from elsewhere, and advancing the United Nations’ pact for the future, the Responsible Islands Programme, and the 2030 Agenda.

Raúl Acosta (AHI) remarked that there is “no superfluous analytical body,” particularly at a “turbulent” time when it is vital to make “sound decisions” devoid of influences from “electoral cycles or parliamentary calculations.”

In his view, “The Canary Islands have a lot at stake,” given its geographic positioning as a “southern border” next to the Sahel, a “volatile area” that necessitates “enhanced foresight and caution.”

He also commented that the office could serve to “assess the risks at hand” or pinpoint opportunities that are sustainable or socially beneficial.
