Santa Cruz de Tenerife 24 Mar. (Europa Press) –
The Cabildo de Tenerife, in partnership with the City of Arafo, is hosting the ‘Violet Island’ Festival on Saturday at the Plaza de San Juan Degollado and the Juan Carlos I Auditorium in the Southern Municipality.
This initiative, developed by the Insular Directorate of Equality and Diversity of the Insular Corporation, will run from 10.00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., promoting gender equality and featuring a diverse array of programming, including cultural activities, workshops, conferences, and exhibitions aimed at raising awareness and educating the public about gender equity.
The event presentation on Monday saw attendance from the Insular Director of Equality and Diversity, Patricia León; the Mayor of Arafo, Juan Ramón Martín; and the Councillor for Education, Citizen Participation, Commerce, and Equality, Mercedes Gracia.
Patricia León expressed her gratitude towards the City of Arafo for “hosting this event that is designed for all families” and acknowledged the technical team’s efforts at the Cabildo “for executing this initiative, which requires considerable coordination.”
“Our aim is to foster community participation to develop a fairer and more equitable society, and this is one of the actions we are undertaking from the Cabildo to achieve this,” she remarked.
In turn, Mayor Juan Ramón Martín encouraged everyone to come to Arafo next Saturday: “Usually, these festivals occur in larger municipalities, so we extend our heartfelt thanks to the town hall for bringing it to our area and for offering a wide variety of activities throughout the day.”
Martín mentioned that engaging with the festival serves to “strengthen” Arafo’s approach, which is a “commitment to equality between men and women.”
He stated, “It is a struggle for women across all fields and sectors, regardless of age, that we must continue to support.”
Mercedes Gracia added that “it will be an action-packed day filled with activities” and explained that the City of Arafo has organised the poetry and music event ‘women in verse’ featuring happiness Batista, Davinia Trujillo, and Aileen López.
Literature by Women
The objective of this activity is to showcase literature created by women and their contributions to equality.
Under the theme ‘We imagine, weave, dance, and narrate a more violet island’, the event will host various activities including the creation of a collaborative mural, craft workshops, fanzine production, dance, storytelling, music, poetry, and various exhibitions.
Additionally, the Insular Centre for Information, Advice and Documentation for Gender Equality of the Cabildo will present exhibitions titled ‘Rural women, working women’, ‘The conquest of women’s rights’, and ‘Women Writers’.
Moreover, between 10:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.,
the evening will feature the Colloquio ‘plough to narrate’ with Sofia Ramos, Daniasa Curbelo, María José Guerra, and Rut Angielina.
