The Secretary of the Canarian Coalition Organisation, David Toledo, expresses his hope that the Autonomous Communities “will continue to mirror the example of solidarity and compassion” displayed by the residents of El Hierro “in response to the arrival of migrants on their shores,” especially at the port of La Restinga, following the issuance of the decree to amend the Foreign Law for mandatory distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors.
In a statement made during a visit to El Hierro, Toledo emphasised that the Canarian island, home to only 7,000 individuals, has had to “manage” “very challenging” situations in the past year regarding the care of these people and the “insufficiency of personnel, logistical, medical and forensic resources.”
The CC Organisation Secretary also reminded that of the 47,000 individuals who reached the Canary Islands in 2024, 23,994 arrived on the meridian island, which is more than three times its population.
“In light of this reality, the Herreña community has set an example to the world of calm, solidarity, and empathy, often feeling isolated and neglected by the State Administration,” he declared.
For Toledo, “no other region of Spain has undertaken or will have to undertake the effort that has been made in El Hierro,” due to its geography, population, and resources. He advocates for taking the island as a “model of determination,” asserting that “if there is a will, there is a way.”
