Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 21 Mar. (Europa Press) –
The Local Police in Santa Cruz de Tenerife apprehended a 43-year-old man on Wednesday morning, who was operating his vehicle in an “erratic” manner along the San Andrés road, exhibiting signs of being under the influence of alcohol. His 11-year-old son was also a passenger in the car.
Upon being intercepted by the officers, the man, identified as ASB, attempted to flee on foot, even assaulting one of the police officers in the process. Additionally, he refused to take the necessary breathalyser test, as noted by the City Council in a statement.
The incident began when a group of cyclists travelling on that road alerted a local police patrol in Taganana about the erratic driving of a Citroën Berlingo they had encountered.
Consequently, the officers altered their direction and, upon reaching María Jiménez, identified the potential offender. The arrested individual displayed signs of alcohol consumption, and it was discovered that an 11-year-old boy, his son, was seated beside him in the front passenger seat.
Abandonment of Vehicle
While attempting to verify the vehicle’s details, the driver began walking along the road and subsequently fled on foot, leaving the engine running and his son inside the vehicle.
One of the officers pursued the man on foot, and upon catching up with him, ASB struck him with an elbow, necessitating the officers to restrain him as he also attempted to seize the officer’s service weapon.
Once restrained, he continued to behave violently towards the officers and refused to comply with the breathalyser test, according to local police reports.
The police made several efforts to locate the child’s guardian, informing her of the situation. The woman, who was working in another municipality in Tenerife, requested the officers to take her child to school where she would later collect him.
These tasks were conducted by agents from the unit assigned to the minor prosecutor’s office, who transported the child to school and handed him over to the responsible staff at the institution.
The municipal tow truck removed the vehicle to a compound, and the arrested individual was taken to a health centre before being transferred to the police and brought before the judicial authority.
