The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, announced on Wednesday that from Thursday, 1,559 families on the island will start receiving up to 800 euros from the Nursery check, intended to assist with essential expenses at children’s centres.
During a press briefing to announce the decisions of the Insular Government Council, Rosa Dávila highlighted that these checks are available for children aged up to three years and stated that the island council has allocated 1,300,000 euros for this initiative.
In a declaration, the Cabildo de Tenerife mentioned that the funding was made possible through the efforts of the Employment Ministry and the FiFede team, “which has managed to prepare the call promptly and efficiently, addressing the more than 2,000 applications received.”
In its second round, the programme received 2,024 applications, marking a 36% rise compared to the previous year when 1,500 applications were submitted.
In light of this increase, the Governing Council has augmented the budget to 1.3 million euros to accommodate more families.
The aim of the nursery check is to alleviate the financial pressure on households, enabling parents to pursue their careers while their children are afforded the required care at children’s centres, according to the island council.
It also underlines that this financial aid is aligned with gender equality initiatives, as it facilitates the balancing of work and parenting responsibilities, preventing many mothers from needing to abandon their jobs.
Notably, 80% of permits for family care are requested by women, thus this type of assistance plays a significant role in closing the gender gap within the workforce.
