Rosa Dávila Unveils Bold Plans for Expanding the Christians’ Port

The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, advocated yesterday for the “essential” expansion of the port of Los Cristianos, including initiatives such as the underpass at Chayofita. She reiterated the “unequivocal” stance of her party, CC, regarding the proposal for a port in Fonsalía (Guía de Isora): “Our position is one of opposition.”

According to data from the Port Authority of Tenerife, the port of Los Cristianos handled 2.3 million passengers and approximately 500,000 vehicles over the past year. These statistics highlight the significant traffic it accommodates.

The island president emphasised that, following a technical analysis presented by the College of Engineers, it is clear that, regardless of the differing political views regarding the establishment of Fonsalía, the “current circumstances in Los Cristianos have become entirely untenable.”

“An intervention on land is necessary at this time, which is already in the planning stages, to address the Chayofita road. Regardless of what may or may not happen in Fonsalía, this intervention is critical to resolve the traffic issues in the area, an action that the City Council must undertake,” she stated.

Furthermore, she remarked that the port at Fonsalía appears to “lack all necessary technical assurances” as outlined in the referenced document, as she believes it is not the “optimal” site for it to become operational, unlike Los Cristianos.

“The College of Engineers has clearly indicated that irrespective of developments at Fonsalía (referring to the alternative port proposal), work must continue in Los Cristianos,” added Dávila, who asserted that Fonsalía “would not be a viable option, either in the short, medium, or long term”, due to the “environmental factors at such a large scale” that would render it impracticable.
