The National Police of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has introduced the “Express DNI”, a semi-automatic processing system that, via a multiple expedition module (ME), aims to accelerate the renewal procedure for the National Identity Document (DNI) and minimise waiting durations.

This system employs cutting-edge biometric capture technology which enables the collection of photographs and fingerprints from the citizen at the time of renewal, therefore eliminating the requirement to submit a printed photograph, as stated by the police force in a communiqué.

This new approach does not require a different type of documentation; rather, it provides the opportunity to speed up the process while maintaining the same level of service and reducing costs in terms of both time and finances, with the ultimate objective of enhancing administrative efficiency and optimisation of resources.

The system has been progressively rolled out across Spanish territory, and in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it can be accessed at the following police stations:

– Provincial Police Station of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

– Local Police Station in La Laguna.

– Local Police Station of Puerto de la Cruz.

– Local Police Station in South Tenerife.

Updates on the System

One of the innovations of the “Express ID” is the reduction in processing time, as it allows for the simultaneous issuance of two documents, thus speeding up renewals.

Moreover, the simplification of the procedure is an advantage, as there is no need to schedule a prior appointment for processing, facilitating access to the service. Additionally, there is an economic benefit, as the citizen is not required to provide a photograph; the module captures and automatically incorporates it into the document.

The renewal fee is set at 12 euros and must be paid in cash. Contactless payment options are anticipated to be enabled shortly.

The system allows for the capture of biometric data and the customisation of access keys to the electronic certificates of the document, ensuring the security of the procedure.

This new method exists alongside the traditional system, giving citizens the option to select the solution that best fits their needs.

Eligibility for the ‘Express DNI’ Processing

To take advantage of the benefits of the “Express DNI”, it is necessary for the identity document to be within its renewal timeframe, which means it must be within 180 days of expiration.

Additionally, personal information must remain unchanged, such as place of residence, and the DNI chip must be in a condition to be read effectively.

The National Police emphasises that renewal must be conducted due to expiration of the document and not due to loss or theft, and that the fingerprints captured must be recognisable by the system.
