Telesforo Bravo Foundation Raises Alarm Over El Teide’s Over-Tourism Crisis

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 19 Mar. (Europa Press) –

The Telesforo Bravo and Juan Coello Foundation has expressed concerns regarding the “chaos” observed last Monday in Teide National Park, where numerous vehicles were parked along the roadways and individuals were wandering beyond the designated paths, thereby “jeopardising their safety.”

In a statement shared via social media, the Foundation criticises the politicians overseeing the park, claiming that while they assert that “unprecedented measures have been implemented to safeguard it,” the truth is that they are merely seeking “more tourists and greater numbers of visitors.”

In this regard, they highlight that although officials maintain that “the National Park is the crown jewel of Tenerife’s protected natural spaces” and assert that “sustainability is paramount,” there has yet to be approval of a PRUG that “restricts” visitor numbers.

The Foundation argues that “they do not want to regulate the access of private vehicles, particularly those for hire,” and they have been unable to manage the “many illegal parking areas” that harm the environment, “despite having announced over a year ago the acquisition of measures to block them.”

“There is insufficient monitoring, and last Monday we had to dissuade several tourists from flying drones and collecting rocks,” they emphasise.
