The Cabildo de Tenerife, alongside the City Council of Garachico, has requested the Directorate of Coast and Middle Coast of the Spanish Government to explore the feasibility of constructing an external dam to mitigate the damage caused by coastal disturbances.
This announcement was made by the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, and the mayor, José Heriberto González, during a visit on Tuesday to assess the damage inflicted on the coastline, particularly on Adolfo Suárez Avenue. The event was also attended by the Minister of Roads, Dámaso Arteaga, and the Insular Director of Security and Emergencies, Iván Martín.
On Monday, waves reaching heights of up to nine metres were recorded, impacting some of the furnishings located on Adolfo Suárez Avenue in Garachico.
Rosa Dávila, the president of the Insular Corporation, explained, “At this location in Garachico, it is typical for the sea to cause disturbances.”
Dávila stated, “When coastal phenomena occur, there exists a risk to the safety of individuals, vehicles, properties, and belongings.”
Regarding the state of coastal phenomena on the remainder of the island, Rosa Dávila mentioned, “Since the Canary Islands government issued the alert, we have coordinated with all municipalities to deploy all necessary prevention teams.”
José Heriberto González emphasised, “We must implement measures to prevent damage. An external structure would help to cushion the impacts of flooding from the sea.”
“I believe now is an opportune moment to act, as we are all aware of the repercussions of climate change.”
Closure of Adolfo Suárez Avenue
The road advisor, Dámaso Arteaga, noted that “the primary incident occurred on Adolfo Suárez Avenue, which is a crucial route on the island.”
Only minor incidents reported elsewhere in Tenerife
The insular director of security and emergencies, Iván Martín, mentioned that, “Following the alert issued by the Canary Islands government regarding the coastal phenomenon and flood risk, we have been in communication with the municipalities.”
