Underwater Fishing Clampdown: Two Men Caught With Nine Octopuses in Güímar

On Monday, the Civil Guard reported that two individuals were apprehended by officers of the armed institute while they were engaging in illegal underwater fishing in a restricted area of Güímar. They were found with nine octopuses weighing approximately 11.5 kilos in total.

The two individuals caught in the act were not using buoys for signalling, which poses a significant risk, and neither possessed the required fishing licence.

According to the authorities, a total of nine violations were recorded against the suspects, three for each under the provisions of Law 17/2003, dated April 10, which regulates fishing in the Canary Islands. These violations included the absence of a mandatory fishing licence, inadequate regulatory signage during fishing activities, and fishing in prohibited zones.

As outlined in the legislation, the infractions can be classified as minor, which may result in a warning or a fine ranging from 60 to 300 euros; serious, with fines from 301 to 60,000 euros; or very serious, which incurs penalties from 60,001 to 300,000 euros.
