Celebrating Excellence: Recognizing Teófila Acosta and Pioneering Women’s Initiatives

The City Council of La Laguna hosted the sixth edition of its gala recognising the women of the municipality on Friday. This event honoured the professional achievements and community contributions of Teófila Acosta Ramos, the Magarza Women’s Association, and the Care Devices of the Insular Institute of Social and Socio-Sanitary Institute (SIAM) and MUVESA.

The ceremony, held at the Leal Theatre, featured the Councilor for Equality and Women, Dilos González, who praised the “effort and dedication” of the award recipients, noting that their work “has broken down barriers, opened paths and demonstrated that talent and vocation do not recognise gender.” The event was also attended by members of the Corporation, representatives from the Municipal Council of Women, and other local institutions.

In discussing the merits of each award recipient, Dailos González highlighted “the example of determination and resilience demonstrated by Teófila Acosta Ramos,” who “became the second woman in Tenerife to obtain a driver’s license for Guaguas at a time when few women ventured into the professional transportation field.”

Additionally, he commended her dedication to the community as president of the Association of Seniors San Joaquín and Santa Ana. Her exemplary leadership serves as an inspiration to younger generations, as she shares her experiences through talks at schools and institutions, motivating young people to pursue their ambitions without being constrained by stereotypes.”

Regarding the Magarza Women’s Association, the councilor remarked that “since its establishment in 1996, it has been a vital force in advocating for the rights and welfare of women in San Bartolomé de Geneto. Magarza reflects the dedication and struggle of women who have raised their voices since the 1980s to better their community conditions. Thanks to their efforts, many women have discovered in this association a platform to be heard, empowered, and actively engage in the social and cultural aspects of their municipality.”

Finally, Dilos González emphasised “the exceptional work” of the comprehensive care device for women at MUVESA, as well as the Insular Service for Women’s Care (SIAM), which focuses on supporting victims of gender violence. The councilor appreciated “the dedication of professionals who, day in and day out, provide hope and safety to numerous women. Their commitment and sensitivity are crucial in aiding women across all areas, offering social, legal, psychological, and employment assistance, as well as combating gender violence, a challenge that confronts us all as a society.”

The gala was presented by journalist Jenifer Jiménez and included performances by a theatrical improvisation group as well as musical acts from Luis Machado and Alberto Méndez.

As part of the agenda of events organised by the City Council of La Laguna in celebration of 8M throughout March, this Saturday the 15th, the Aguere space will host Kosta + Dj Zanet at 6:30 p.m. The following week will feature further activities, including the Women’s Association awards (Wednesday 19 at the Leal Theatre), a workshop led by María Martín Barranco (Friday 21 at the Orfeón La Paz), and both the Matria Concert and the Magarza Festival (Saturday 22 at the Citizen Centres El Tram and San Bartolomé de Geneto, respectively).
