Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 13 Mar. (Europa Press) –
The president of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, expressed on Thursday that the proposed rise in defence funding by the central government must not come “at the expense of” public services.
“It is unjust towards the population,” he remarked to reporters following the conclusion of the ‘debate on the state of nationality’, admitting that he is “concerned” regarding the direction of this expenditure, although he clarified that, as of now, there is no proposal under consideration.
He emphasised his preference for being “serious and thorough” when evaluating proposals and noted that, as a general principle, any budget increase should not adversely impact the autonomous financing system or social policies.
Additionally, he stated that his party, CC, and his administration advocate for the Canary Islands to act as a “platform for peace” which also focuses on cooperation and development with Africa.
