Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 10 Mar. (Europa Press) –

A Cardinal from Rome, the Nuncio of the Holy See in Spain, Bernardito Cleopas, along with bishops and numerous priests from the Nivariense diocese, as well as representatives from diocesan bodies across the islands and parish groups from the entire region, will gather on May 1 at the cathedral of the lagoon to witness the enthronement of Eloy Santiago Tenerife.

To refine the arrangements, the City Council of La Laguna and the Nivariense Diocese convened a preliminary coordination meeting on Monday to ensure the event proceeds smoothly.

Representatives from the council included La Laguna’s mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, the Councilor for Security, Badel Albelo, the Councilor for Fiestas, Dailos González, along with the technical director of the Mayor’s Office, Óscar Olave, and the head of the City Council Protocol.

The Bishopric of La Laguna was represented by the Diocesan administrator, Antonio Pérez Morales, the Cathedral Canon, Norberto Hernández, and the diocesan liturgy delegate, Francisco Ignacio Hernández Rivero.

In a statement, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez remarked that the episcopal ordination “is a significant occasion for the life of this city, which is home to the bishopric’s headquarters” and emphasised the aim for “La Laguna to present its best face” to the anticipated large crowd, marking a day of celebration.

“We will allocate all our resources to ensure everything proceeds smoothly,” he indicated.

Antonio Pérez elaborated that several matters concerning the management of streets and public spaces, road safety, and overall logistics of the event outside the Cathedral were discussed, including the installation of large screens so those unable to access the temple can follow the proceedings from the Plaza de los Remedios.

The day will commence at 10:30 am from the Bishopric headquarters on San Agustín Street, with a procession of the ecclesiastical delegation towards the Cathedral, where the religious ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.

Among other preparations, the event will require adjustments to traffic in various areas of the city centre, management of parking facilities and official vehicles, as well as heightened security measures.

Before the conclusion of this meeting, both the City Council and the Bishopric will hold a second coordination session, which the newly elected bishop will attend, to finalise the details concerning the security plan.

It has been nearly 20 years since the last episcopal ordination took place in La Laguna (the current Bishop Emeritus, Bernardo Hernández, was ordained on June 29, 2005), and a large mass celebration is anticipated.
