On Monday, South Tenerife Airport conducted an air accident drill to assess its response capabilities and coordination with external assistance services.

The exercise involved simulating an incident with a commercial Embraer aircraft carrying 24 passengers and five crew members, as detailed by Aena in a statement.

During the landing manoeuvre, the aircraft indicated a malfunction in one of its engines, veering off its path and landing outside the perimeter fence and airport boundaries, in Zone E.

In Zone E, the civil protection plans of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands were also activated, with emergency command being overseen by the General Emergency Department of the Canary Islands Government.

The final casualty report of the exercise indicated 10 fatalities, 10 very serious injuries, eight serious injuries, and one minor injury.

This was all part of the exercise to make sure the correct measures were followed and put into action whenever needed.

Alongside AENA personnel and the companies operating at the airport, the response involved the Government of the Canary Islands (CECOES-12 and DGE), the delegation and sub-delegation of the Government, Civil Protection, the Firefighters Consortium of Tenerife, the Canarian Emergency Department, the Canary Health Service, the Red Cross, the College of Psychologists, and the Local Police of Granadilla de Abona.

Through this exercise, South Tenerife Airport adheres to the regulations set by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) regarding emergency planning, which encompasses all action procedures and protocols for requesting coordinated external assistance, as outlined in the statement.
