Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 7 Mar. (Europa Press) –

The Minister of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children and Families of the Government of the Canary Islands, Candelaria Delgado, has called this Friday for a “collective struggle” to achieve “gender equality and social justice.”

During the official event hosted by the Executive for ‘International Women’s Day’, she emphasised that “it is the duty of this government to direct all policies and efforts towards women, particularly those facing additional challenges due to their disability, ethnicity, origin, sexual orientation or age.”

Therefore, she reiterated that “on this day we reaffirm our steadfast commitment to gender equality and social justice.”

In that vein, she highlighted the “unwavering social demand” against “structural inequality”, asserting that gender equality is a “goal for humanity” that requires effort at all levels, from institutions to countries.

At the event, the Minister for Equality of the Canarian Executive read the Declaration for International Women’s Day, inviting others present to participate, including the Minister of the Presidency, Nieves Lady Barreto, the director of the ICI, Ana Brito, and the General Director of Sweet Disability Gutierrez.

The event also featured Canarian athletes María Pino Bumberg, a Boccia competitor, Sonia Ramos de Goso, a triathlete, and Laura Báez Pulido.

“Today we reaffirm our commitment to actively working towards eliminating all forms of discrimination and inequality affecting women. It is crucial to implement inclusive policies that foster universal accessibility, equal opportunities, and full respect for the human rights of all women,” stated Delgado.

She clarified that to this end, a campaign for March 8 titled ‘Let’s look for all’ has been initiated in collaboration with the seven island councils. “With this, we aim to encourage society as a whole to join the fight for the rights of all women,” she stressed.

Ana Brito Brito, the director of the Canarian Institute of Equality (ICI), encouraged everyone to “reflect” on what can be done within their environments to “foster a more inclusive and respectful world.”

“Together, we possess the power to transform reality, whether by supporting a woman in her professional journey, educating future generations on equality, or simply raising our voices when needed,” she explained.

The act concluded with a musical performance by Fabiola Socas Luis and José Antonio Afonso Romero, blending the essence of advocacy with the celebration of this global occasion.
