Police Uncover Illegal Clam Fishing in the Canary Islands

The General Corps of the Canarian Police, via the Environmental and Cultural Heritage Group (GRAMA) within the Administrative Surveillance and Inspection Unit (UVIA), in collaboration with Rural Guardian agents from the Civil Guard, have apprehended an individual illegally fishing for Canary Alms (Haliotis tuberculata) in a protected coastal area at Los Colmenares beach, located in San Miguel de Abona.

The Canarian clam holds significant importance for the ecosystems of the Canary Islands, and fishing for it is strictly forbidden without the appropriate permits. Consequently, an official report was filed for breaching regulations, as stated by the Canary Police.

The authority emphasises that such actions are vital for the preservation of protected natural areas, and it is imperative that environmental legislation is adhered to in order to safeguard biodiversity and maintain the ecological balance of these locations.

The cooperation among various units and specialised agents facilitates effective management and enhances awareness regarding the significance of complying with environmental protection laws, it emphasises.

The Administrative Surveillance and Inspection Unit is responsible for a range of duties including preventive policing, investigation, and reporting of administrative offences in areas such as environment and natural resources, tourism management in the Canary Islands, Canarian cultural heritage, tax administration, transport, gambling, and any other functions assigned to it, as per the resolution of January 17, 2025, from the General Directorate of Security.
