Following thecancellation of the carnival finale on Tuesday, an event that also impacted the fair and other activities, it has been confirmed across social media that there will be no further carnival proceedings this year due to mourning for a victim of an attack who subsequently died during the night from Monday to Tuesday.

Notably on Tik Tok and Instagram, a message featuring the letterhead of Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council is circulating, claiming a supposed urgent notice stating that all remaining Carnival activities are suspended; however, this has been categorically denied by the city council.

“This is not accurate“, stated sources from the City Council, which may be contemplating the potential of hosting the Coso this Sunday, although the likelihood is low considering the number of events typically held during the Piñata weekend.

Fatal Incident

A30-year-old man from Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, who was involved in a fight early in the morning along Maritime Avenue in Santa Cruz de Tenerife during the Carnival, tragically passed away while being transported in a medical ambulance to the Hospital La Candelaria (Hunsc).

He had suffered asevere cranioencephalic injury and was stabilised, intubated, and taken to the hospital; however, en route, he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and did not survive.

Sources suggest that this marks thefirst violent incident at the main festival in the capital of Tenerife in recent years that has resulted in a fatality.

The Assault

It is reported that after receiving a blow to the back, a 19-year-old male retaliated with aforceful punch to the victim, who subsequently fell and sustained a head injury that proved fatal.

The Deceased

The victim was originally from Gran Canaria and had been living in Lanzarote, working in the hospitality sector. He had travelled to Tenerife to partake in Carnival Monday celebrations with friends, intending to return to the island of volcanoes on Tuesday.

Shortly after the incident, two individuals were apprehended by the Police Intervention Unit (UIP) of the National Police at the scene where the altercation took place, once security and emergency personnel were deployed.

Signs of Prior Conflict

One of the arrested individuals is alleged to be the direct perpetrator of the victim’s assault, while the other was found with evidence of involvement in a fight. He too was arrested, though the specifics of his involvement in the homicide or his connection to an earlier altercation remain unclear.

The events transpired at around 05:00 hours close to the thoroughfare between Maritime Avenue and Anaga Avenue (Francisco La Roche).

Police Forces

The UIP, tasked with overseeing that section of the carnival area, were the first to respond to reports of a brawl. In that festive quarter, officers from the National Police were also on duty.

Investigators from the homicide division of the Judicial Police Brigade are working under the premise that the fight may have stemmed from a chance encounter between the involved parties.

The two detainees are young men, of Spanish nationality and Canarian descent. An autopsy on the deceased will elucidate the cause or causes of the cardiorespiratory arrest from which he could not be revived.
