The representative of the parliamentary group Gomera Socialist Group (ASG), Casimiro Curbelo.
Casimiro Curbelo articulated that “in an autonomous community, the central government can legitimately delegate powers to any autonomous region, as is occurring in other areas of responsibility.”
Undeniably, he emphasised, “we need to ascertain whether it aligns with the Constitution,” adding that “it complies with the law.”
He cited the example of the Cabildo de la Gomera, which “will soon receive the delegation of powers concerning Garajonay National Park, as this is in accordance with the law, similar to the delegation of powers regarding migration to Catalonia.”
In his view, “while it may not be the ideal time, if this delegation enables the government to achieve a parliamentary majority, thanks to Junts’ support, it might represent a solution for the Canary Islands.”
According to Curbelo, “the PSOE is currently negotiating that majority, which would benefit the islands by modifying the Foreigners Law and addressing the issue we face with the adequate care of nearly 6,000 unaccompanied migrants already within the archipelago.”
The ASG’s parliamentary spokesperson urged for “common sense and a collective effort to build a better nation and resolve the issues facing the Canary Islands, rather than pursuing a confrontational approach that exploits the parliamentary vulnerabilities of the Government of Spain.”
He also cautioned that “the situation is deteriorating on the international stage, particularly with the conflict instigated by Trump, not just with the tariffs he is proposing or imposing, but also in terms of broader policy.”
Hence, he reiterated that “now is the time to ensure that the European Union adopts a policy that is consistent with the migration phenomenon and seeks out solutions to a long-standing issue.”
