Suspect Arrested in Connection with Fatal Incident at Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival

A second individual has been apprehended in connection with the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival incident that occurred last Monday morning, resulting in the death of a 30-year-old resident of Gran Canaria, as confirmed by sources from the National Police to Europa Press.

The two individuals in custody are awaiting their court appearance.

The mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, met with the victim’s father on Tuesday to express the corporation’s condolences and offered the council’s assistance in any way required.

In remarks made to Radio Club Tenerife and reported by Europa Press, he stated that the loss of a child is “irreparable” and “impossible to console,” adding that the events, which are currently under judicial investigation, transpired when two groups of youths engaged in a fight. A blow was struck that resulted in cranioencephalic trauma to the deceased, who sadly passed away in the ambulance en route to the hospital due to cardiac arrest.

“It remains unclear whether the two arrested are from the same group or different groups, as it appears the assailant also required medical attention for an injury,” he remarked.

The mayor refuted claims of reduced security personnel at the carnival, highlighting that what occurred, by directive of the Ministry of Interior, involved a replacement of one force with another in the fair area; specifically, the Civil Guard was substituted by the National Police, without a reduction in numbers.

Furthermore, he indicated that the fight took place within the carnival’s designated area (in close proximity to Francisco La Roche Avenue), which was monitored by the National Police from the outset.

He also noted that “apart from the tragic case of the deceased individual,” this year’s Carnival has seen “fewer incidents” than the previous two years, with a reduction in the number of brain injuries during carnival Monday, despite the one “irreparable” fatality.

In that regard, he emphasised that the data reflects a “better” performance compared to earlier editions, including decreases in falls and alcohol-related incidents.
