Easier Snowy Access to Teide for Hikers: New Footpath Procedures

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 1 Mar. (Europa Press) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife has streamlined the procedures for accessing the Paths of Teide National Park when snow and ice are present for mountain federation members, with a daily limit set at 100 individuals, as stated in a press release issued by the insular corporation on Saturday.

Consequently, federated mountaineers will be permitted to utilise the trails provided they possess the essential winter gear (technical clothing, crampons, and piolet) and have submitted a responsible declaration while processing the corresponding authorisation via the website and the Tenerife On application.

The council emphasises that up until now, a capacity certification issued by the relevant federations was also necessary; however, this requirement has been replaced by a responsible declaration, a decision agreed upon with representatives of the mountain sports organisations.

Access Control

In an effort to “preserve the natural environment and regulate the flow” of visitors, the Cabildo has implemented an online booking system via the Tenerife On platform.

This initiative covers the trails: PNT 07 Blanco – Pico Mountain of Teide (section between the summit of the white mountain and the junction with PNT 11: viewpoint of the fortress), route PNT 09 Teide – Pico Viejo (section between the junction of PNT 09 Teide – Pico Viejo – Mirador de las Narices del Teide and PNT 32 23 Los regatones negros and PNT 28 Chafarí.

The reservation request process is supplemented by an on-site surveillance system tasked with ensuring that hikers have the appropriate authorisation and meet the minimum equipment criteria.

Furthermore, at these checkpoints, users are informed of restrictions pertaining to adverse weather conditions or any other factors that render the trails impracticable or unsafe for hikers. Violations of these restrictions will incur penalties as per current legislation.

Thus, when ice or snow is present on the mentioned trails, only those federated individuals who possess the required experience, validated by a responsible declaration and the authorisation processed through the Tenerife On platform, will be admitted.

Additionally, under general regulation – that is, when the trails are open to the public – an agreement has been established to allocate a reserve quota of authorisations amounting to 10% of the 300 daily spots for Canarian mountaineers holding a federation licence, which will be available up to 48 hours in advance.

In any event, these individuals must apply for authorisation via the Tenerife On application.
