The City Council of Arona has integrated 61 out of 119 workers from the Social Employment Programme (PES) 2024-2025, an initiative funded by the Canarian Employment Service (SEC) of the Autonomous Government, following the Framework Collaboration Agreement established with the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (FECAM) aimed at facilitating utility and reintegration tasks.
Spanning a duration of nine months and a budget of 1,460,435 euros – which includes a municipal contribution of 503,676 euros and 956,759 euros funded by the Canarian Employment Service – this second call encompasses the hiring of six Library Administrative Assistants, five administrative assistants, six home help aides, a production assistant and event organiser, a graphic and multimedia designer, a network administrator, five sports monitors TFAD, 10 sociocultural monitors, 15 general service operators, an image and sound technician, another IT specialist, two caretakers, a seamstress, and six ordinances.
The third and final round of the 2024-2025 period will take place this month, aiming to fill all 119 positions outlined in the current Social Employment Programme (PES) of Arona.
The PES addresses economic and social challenges faced by Canary Islanders lacking essential resources to meet their basic needs, primarily due to barriers in accessing the labour market caused by social exclusion or vulnerability. Concurrently, it promotes labour reactivation and enhances employability through jobs or services of general or social interest.
The Mayor of Arona, Fatima Lemes, alongside the Councilor for Human Resources, Devi Pereyra, welcomed the 61 participants of this employment scheme during an event held at the Cultural Centre of Christians. The Mayor emphasised, “These initiatives not only assist individuals struggling to enter the job market but also benefit our municipality, as they will carry out tasks required by the community.”
The Delegate Councilor for Economic Promotion, Melania Santos, shared that “today marks a significant moment for our municipality and, specifically, for those participating in the 2024-2025 Social Employment Programme. The inclusion of 61 workers into this programme highlights our dedication to provide job opportunities to those in greatest need, especially those in vulnerable circumstances.” She noted that in the realm of economic promotion and employment, “we strongly believe that access to work is crucial for dignity and personal advancement. This initiative, a result of our collaboration with the Canarian Employment Service and the Canarian Federation of Municipalities, not only generates income for the participants but also equips them with the essential tools to enhance their long-term employability.”
Melania Santos affirmed, “This programme will not only bolster the well-being of our municipality but will also have a positive impact on the lives of the participants, enabling them to gain experience and skills that will ease their transition into the labour market.” The council-member concluded, expressing her enthusiasm “for the launch of this programme and what it signifies for our municipality. Together, we are committed to working for Arona and its residents,” she added.
